AURAK Aligns Academic Expansion with Ras Al Khaimah’s Rapid Growth

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) is taking proactive steps to align its academic programmes, research efforts, and industry collaborations with the remarkable pace of development in Ras Al Khaimah.

As the emirate surges ahead with large-scale projects across tourism, real estate, and hospitality—including the region’s first integrated gaming resort—it has seen over 12% growth in tourism revenue and a 15% rise in MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) arrivals.

Positioning itself as a leading investment destination, Ras Al Khaimah welcomed 1.28 million visitors in 2024 and is on track to attract 3.5 million by 2030. It continues to draw international hospitality brands, luxury developers, and major investors.

AURAK has been a steadfast partner in this progress, bolstered by its academic standing. The university earned the prestigious QS 5 Stars Plus rating in 2023—joining a select group of globally recognised institutions.

“Ras Al Khaimah stands at the threshold of a bold new future, powered by a growth strategy that harmonizes the preservation of natural beauty and culture with modern attractions, services, and amenities,” said Dr. David Schmidt, President of AURAK. “At AURAK, we are committed to supporting this transformation by enhancing and expanding our academic portfolio—bridging the gap between academia and the dynamic industries propelling RAK’s unprecedented advancement.”

In response, AURAK is strengthening its offerings in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Biotechnology, Engineering, Computer Science, and Hospitality and Tourism Management.

AI will be integrated across various programmes, with students in engineering and architecture now able to pursue a Minor in Artificial Intelligence alongside their major degrees.

AURAK is also amplifying its research ecosystem through flagship centres including the Advanced Technology and Artificial Intelligence Center (ATAIC), the AURAK Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE), and the RAK Research and Innovation Center—specialising in renewable energy solutions such as solar power.

To deepen alignment with economic priorities, the university continues to build partnerships with government and industry. During AURAK Career Week 2025, 32 companies visited campus to offer internships and employment to students and alumni.

Major developments such as the $5.1 billion Wynn Al Marjan Island resort and other luxury hospitality and adventure tourism ventures are transforming the emirate into a global attraction.

With manufacturing contributing 27% to GDP, Ras Al Khaimah boasts a robust and diversified economy. Iconic adventure tourism experiences—such as the world’s longest zipline (Jais Flight), Bear Grylls Explorers Camp, Jais Wings paragliding, and Via Ferrata—further cement its appeal.

Ras Al Khaimah’s upward momentum was validated in 2024 by international credit agencies. Fitch upgraded its rating to A+, while S&P Global elevated it to A/A-1, citing strong economic performance and a solid pipeline of development projects.
